SUMMARY:You Found Kittens Outside — Here's What to Do Next
DESCRIPTION:By Deborah Felin Magaldi\, Director\, Helen Sanders CatPAWS. Photo Credit: Spruce / Domestic Medium Hair\, Adoptable.\nYou see them. Tiny\, squirming\, impossibly small: a litter of kittens tucked behind a bush\, under a porch\, or near a parking lot curb. Your instinct is immediate: pick them up\, take them somewhere safe. That instinct comes from a good place. But acting on it too quickly can actually do more harm than good. \nHere’s what I’ve learned\, after years working with community cats and kittens: the first thing to do is almost always to stop and wait. \nWait Before You Touch Anything\nMom cat is probably nearby. She could be out hunting\, she could have spooked when she heard you coming\, or she might be watching you right now from a few feet away. If the kittens look plump\, their coats look clean\, and they’re not crying constantly\, there’s a good chance she has been caring for them and will come back. \nUnless those kittens are in obvious danger\, near a busy road\, exposed to rain\, or in reach of a predator\, leave them alone for a few hours. A newborn kitten with her mother has a dramatically better chance of surviving than one in human hands\, no matter how well-meaning those hands are. Mom’s milk delivers the nutrients and immune-building antibodies that nothing else can fully replicate. \nIf she does come back\, you can support her without disrupting things. Leave food nearby. If the weather is rough\, you can build a simple outdoor shelter. There are plenty of free guides online for creating safe enclosures for free-roaming community cats. \nWhen Something Is Clearly Wrong\nSome signs tell you mom isn’t coming back. Kittens that are matted\, visibly dirty\, crying without stopping\, or cold to the touch need help. The same goes for kittens in a location that’s actively unsafe\, like near heavy traffic or in extreme weather. If several hours pass and there’s no sign of the mother\, it’s time to step in. \nAnd once you step in\, you become their best shot at making it. \nWhy the Shelter Isn’t Always the Answer\nMany people’s first thought is to bring the kittens to an animal shelter. It seems like the right move\, they’re professionals\, they have supplies\, they know what to do. But the reality is more complicated. \nNeonatal kittens\, meaning those in the first weeks of life\, need around-the-clock feeding\, stimulation\, and monitoring. Most shelters simply don’t have the staff or resources to provide that kind of care. And when they can’t\, those kittens often don’t make it. I’ve seen it happen more times than I’d like. \nRescue groups are another option people reach for. But here’s something worth knowing: rescue groups are typically small\, volunteer-run operations. The people behind them are spending their own time and their own money. They receive more requests for help than they can ever fulfill\, and many already have every foster spot full. Even if a rescue group can’t take in your kittens\, they may be able to walk you through what to do yourself. \nYou Can Do This\nThis is the part people don’t expect to hear: you might be the best option those kittens have. Not a shelter\, not a rescue group: you. \nThere are more resources available for this than ever before. A simple search for “how to care for newborn kittens” or “abandoned kitten care” will bring up detailed guides and videos covering everything from how to bottle feed to how to keep them warm to how to help them go to the bathroom (yes\, that part too). Organizations like CatPAWS (helensanderscatpaws.com) also publish guidance for people who find themselves in exactly this situation. \nA few weeks of your life\, some sleepless nights\, some feedings every two hours\, some very small victories\, can give those kittens an entire life. They go from helpless to healthy\, and eventually to someone’s home\, someone’s companion\, someone’s favorite creature in the world. \nThat’s not nothing. That’s everything. \nFAQ: Finding Kittens Outdoors\nShould I pick up kittens if I find them outside? Not right away. Wait several hours to see if the mother returns. If the kittens appear healthy and the area is safe\, she is likely still caring for them. \nHow do I know if kittens have been abandoned? Watch for signs like constant crying\, dirty or matted fur\, being cold to the touch\, or no sign of the mother after a few hours of observation. \nCan I take kittens to a shelter? You can\, but many shelters lack the resources for neonatal kittens. It’s worth calling ahead or exploring fostering them yourself with guidance from a rescue group. \nWhat do newborn kittens eat if there’s no mother? Kitten milk replacer (KMR)\, available at most pet stores. Never give cow’s milk. Feeding frequency depends on age; very young kittens need to eat every 2 hours. \nWhere can I find help if I’m not sure what to do? Search for local rescue groups or cat-specific organizations. Even if they can’t take the kittens in\, many will mentor you through the process. \nThe Bridge Nobody Planned to Be\nNobody wakes up expecting to spend three weeks bottle-feeding a litter of kittens. But sometimes that’s exactly what happens\, and the people who show up for it\, unprepared and a little overwhelmed\, are the reason those animals are alive. \n If you need a starting point\, foundations like Helen Sanders CatPAWS exist precisely for moments like this: they support community cats and the people who unexpectedly find themselves caring for them.  \nYou don’t need a rescue badge or a clinic on speed dial. You need a little information\, a little patience\, and the willingness to be the bridge between where those kittens are and where they deserve to end up. \nAnd when you get there\, when those kittens are healthy\, eating on their own\, and headed somewhere they’ll be loved\, there really is nothing quite like it.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n______________________________________________________\nDeborah Felin Magaldi is the Director of Helen Sanders CatPAWS\, a nonprofit cat rescue and advocacy organization she has led for 16 years. After a massive earthquake devastated Haiti\, Paul spontaneously organized a relief team that responded to the disaster. On the trip\, Paul saw a gap between the availability of skilled resources and the requirement for such personnel in post-disaster situations. Upon returning from Haiti\, Paul established ROWW with the purpose of fulfilling this unmet need. Since Paul’s passing\, ROWW continues to be a platform for like-minded individuals to make a difference in other people’s lives. It started as an idea and has transformed into a culture equally benefiting the volunteers as much as the people they are assisting. It’s turning the “I generation” into a “goodwill\ngeneration.” It’s giving good people not just a voice but a chance to act. To this day ROWW remains very active and responsive to disasters all over the world. For further press information visit www.roww.org.
