Sequoia Nursery School, one of Oakland’s first and most beloved early childhood education institutions, is celebrating 75 fun-filled years of operation. The nonprofit cooperative preschool was founded in the 1947-48 school year and has operated out of the City of Oakland’s historic Sequoia Lodge since it was built in the 1960s. Designed by architect Walter Thomas Brooks, the mid-century building was paid for in part by Sequoia Nursery School, a gift to the Oakland community that’s often used as a venue for weddings and other special events.
Sequoia Nursery School invites families with preschool aged children to join the celebration and attend its 75th Birthday Spring Carnival on Saturday, May 6th. Admission is free and tickets are limited. https://sequoiaspringcarnival.eventbrite.com
● “Sequoia was founded on the core values that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and ‘play is the work of young children. Our program, like many parent-run cooperative preschool programs, nurtures children and grownups alike. There’s an emphasis on respect, social-emotional development and fostering community.” – Lori Fuller, Sequoia director
● “Our family is so very thankful that we got to be a part of the Sequoia community. That time shaped who we are as a family, and we still make use of many of the things we learned – both as kids and as parents. – Michael Dewey, Sequoia alumni parent
