Did you know that the census, which occurs every 10 years, is mandated by the U.S. Constitution? It’s purpose is to count every resident of the United States and then use that data to determine not only representation in the House of Representatives but also where to direct billions of dollars in federal funding.
April 1, 2020 was officially “Census Day” but like all other things, it has been greatly affected by our current pandemic. Census takers, who are hired by the government, to knock on doors and help count people have been sidelined. Although surveys were mailed out to every residential address, the follow up tactics have had to shift to an online and telephone campaign.
According to the California Census website the information we provide will help Californians in three main ways:
Uplift our neighborhoods
An accurate census count helps determine where funds should be directed. These funds help programs such as
- Improve local schools
- Enhance streets and roads
- Build affordable housing
- Increase jobs and business opportunities
Community Wellness
The physical health and wellbeing of Californian’s is important, too and the census data informs
- Where new hospitals are built
- Improves existing health services
- Increases jobs and business opportunities
A Voice for California
According to the California Census website “The 2020 Census will determine the number of representatives California has in the U.S. House of Representatives and the number of votes we have in the Electoral College. Your information will also be used to redraw State Assembly and Senate boundaries. Participating in the 2020 Census ensures that you and your communities have fair representation.”
It is important to know that any identifiable information you provide in the census cannot be released, even to other US agencies like immigration or law enforcement. You are protected under Title 13 of the U.S. Code.
If you have yet to complete the survey (online, by phone, or through the U.S. Mail, please do so here by September 30th. This is a great way to give a voice to your children.
