Supporting Those Who Helped Build Your Mom Village

0

San Francisco simultaneously has so much to offer families, while also being a difficult city to live in as a family. I wondered recently, then, about how hard it must be to thrive as a small business or resource serving families in SF. Rising rents and short customer lifecycles (our little are only little for so long!) are just two examples of challenges local organizations serving new families likely face. Yet these resources were invaluable to us in those early times of need. In the spirit of community, how can we give back to those who helped us build our mom village? Here are six ideas to help you brainstorm!

Carmel Blue

After serving new families in North Beach and beyond since 2010, Carmel Blue will be closing this summer. There’s a free Summer Family Kick Off/Farewell Carmel Blue event on Saturday, June 2nd, and it would be great if Carmel Blue moms past and present could show some love and join for the final hurrah!

Golden Gate Mothers Group

Remember those early days of motherhood when you appreciated the sage advice or empathetic support of other moms on GGMG’s forums? Now you can be the mom who responds to questions and helps new moms not sweat the small stuff. Or you can become a volunteer and give back through events, member support, and more.

Main Street Mamas

MSM’s headquarters is opening soon to give the online group an official space to connect. Monthly memberships are available to help the storefront initiative hit the ground running.

Recess – urban recreation

The Potrero Hill family gem is celebrating their 10th Anniversary and also fundraising for their new nonprofit, Recess Collective. Join the celebration Saturday, May 19th, or contribute to the YouCaring fundraiser to allow Recess to reach even more families, such as moms with postpartum depression, children with special needs, and those without access to a safe space to play.

Our Family Coalition

With a focus on creating an inclusive community for LGBTQ families, Our Family Coalition offers classes, meet-ups, and support for local families and there are so many ways to give back. Attend one of the many events taking place each month, volunteer your time, make a monetary donation, or take action by participating in grassroots advocacy campaigns.

San Francisco Moms Blog

Love reading articles on San Francisco Moms Blog? Share your favorites with friends! There are other ways to get involved with the community, such as joining a neighborhood group, attending local events, submitting a guest post, or becoming a regular contributor.

If you sometimes find yourself wishing SF could be a little more family friendly, be a cheerleader for the small businesses and organizations that are working tirelessly to help do just that. What small businesses and organizations were instrumental in building your mom village? How can you give back or pay it forward for other moms?
