We recently moved to the west side of the city, and it’s taken some time to find all the local kids’ hot spots. One of our new favorites, Recess Collective, as it turns out, has just moved here, too! Recess was previously located in Potrero Hill and is now in the Sunset.
Recess offers a playspace, workspace, and community space hosting weekly activities, classes, workshops and playdates for young children and their caregivers. We’ve been members for just over a month and have thoroughly enjoyed the physical space, class offerings, and friendly community we’ve found there.
Our first visit to Recess was to play in the playspace on a rainy day. Both my boys (4-½ and 2 yrs old) had oodles of fun and could have stayed all day! My older son loved climbing up the “rock climbing” wall and going down the slide. My little guy loved the pretend car he could drive, the giant swing, and the wall full of magnetic shapes. They spent no less than an hour at the train table, and both really liked tossing the foam cubes around. This indoor playground is extremely clean, well organized, and full of age-appropriate toys for ages ranging from babies (there is a large, padded crawlers zone) up through preschool age.

Last week, we participated in an Intergenerational Yoga class. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what an Intergenerational Yoga class was, but we do like so yoga so decided to try it. What a sweet idea this is! Babies, toddlers, and their grown-ups occupied mats on the floor while the seniors who joined us sat on chairs or on mats of their own. The instructor did a wonderful job of guiding the class of all levels, maintaining the children’s attention, giving mamas a chance to stretch, and offering movements the seniors could partake in, at varying levels of flexibility.
This past month, Recess has offered live music classes, daily sensory play, and will be starting adult pilates classes (with childcare!) soon.
It is more than just a playspace. One of the differences I noticed immediately was how friendly and outgoing the other moms here were. Within five minutes, two other Moms introduced themselves to me and struck up friendly conversation. One even offered to share her coffee creamer with me—Recess provides an assortment of coffee and tea but if you have a preference for unsweetened vanilla soy creamer, BYO and store it in the community fridge.
Joining the Recess community is $89/mo for a family membership and $0/mo (just a one time $50 registration fee) if your child is 6 months or younger. Street parking is easy, a combination of metered and neighborhood spots. They are open M, T, Th, F 9:30am – 5:30pm and on weekends 9:30am – 12:30pm.
