How to Wear Overalls Like a Grownup

Overalls! As a mom of two, I don’t often think of them as an option. But they have been showing up on the runways and in stores for several years now in different forms. Printed, flared, skinny fit, shorts or full length seem to be fair game.

In a recent conversation with some mom friends, the topic of the overalls trend came up. Traditional fashion bloggers wear them with tight white tanks and high heels. The group agreed that this look was not something any of us were going to rock anytime soon.

However, I try to be open-minded about fashion trends so I took on the challenge of writing a post about how to wear overalls as a mom in San Francisco.

I rely on H&M for trendy pieces like this because I’m not sure how often I’ll wear them. So, I went online and found a great pair of mid blue overalls with a side zip and stretch in the fabrication. I sized way up because I wanted a relaxed fit and the reviews said they ran small.

Then I set out experimenting with looks.

Overalls + White Button-down + Booties

I went classic at first with a clean white button-down and statement earrings. I chose to wear a white shirt instead of a printed one to keep the look more classy and less cowboy. Try this straight fit oxford shirt from Banana Republic. Roll the sleeves to keep with the casual vibe! Wear with your go-to ankle booties in any color for that city-chic edge.

Overalls + Olive Tank + Kimono + Slides

I wanted my next look to be more bohemian casual so I put on a sleeveless olive green tank from Target, a floral kimono from Anthropologie, and a pair of asymmetrical slides from 1. State. I felt ready for a bonfire on Ocean Beach with the family in this outfit!

Overalls + Black Tank + Leather Jacket + Wedge Sneakers

For my final look, I wanted something with a bit more feminine edge that I might wear on movie date with my husband, so I went with a black tank with lace detailing from Stella and Dot, my beloved leather jacket from Madewell and a pair of black wedge sneakers. This look says effortless style and endless fun.

After experimenting with overalls for a few days, I found myself reaching for them time and time again! They are supremely comfortable, and I’m finding them to be versatile as well. It’s time for you to try the overall trend for yourself and have a date night look, a bohemian day look, and a classic running errands with the kids look at your fingertips!
