Stay Well This Cold and Flu Season

I don’t know about you, but although I LOVE this time of year, (the pumpkin spice, the fall recipes, the holidays) I HATE the cold and flu! I hate that feeling you get in the morning, where your throat is a little scratchy, and you just know it’s coming… And as awful as it is for moms to be sick, we power through, but when our kids are sick, it’s a different story.  There is nothing worse than a sick kid.  How many of you have slept on the floor in your baby’s room?  How many of you have stayed up ALL night rocking them in a rocking chair trying to comfort them?  We have all been there.

Here are a few things we can do to help our family and kids get through the cold and flu season:

  1.  Wash hands.  Sounds easy, yes, but when you are moving fast and managing a few kids, you might forget!  I try to remember to have my kids wash their hands each time they enter our house from being out and before they eat.  After leaving school, I use sanitizing gel or wipes to clean their hands after we get in the car seat.  If you make it part of your routine, your child might actually help you remember! My husband and I wash our hands too.  We don’t need germs from work, the bank, or the grocery store making their way into the house either.  (Now, I know you must think I am a germaphobe.  But I actually have a degree in Microbiology and think germs are good for our kids’ immune systems.  I just don’t care for the flu!)
  2. Keep your kids home when they are sick.  Be respectful.  If everyone did this, we could prevent so many illnesses at school.  Sometimes you are on the fence, I understand, but if your child has had a fever in the last 24 hours, I don’t want them playing with my kid.
  3. Stay hydrated and rested.  This season can be tough on your family’s immune systems so help support them with rest and water.
  4. Consider a flu shot.  Talk to your doctor and see if that is right for your family.
  5. Be alert when you’re out and about.  If you see someone sick, politely stay away. Your kid doesn’t need to share a snack with the kid at the playground who has watery eyes.  Also, clean the carts at the grocery store.  My son is usually eating a snack while sitting in the cart touching everything! Use the wipes they have at the door to give the cart handles a little clean.  Seriously, who cares if someone judges you.  There is nothing worse than a sick kid, remember!

Ok, so now you know my tips, but what happens if this creepy little bug gets into the house, which we all know it inevitably will at some point. That’s when you need real help.  Did you know that Hyland’s makes a cough and cold homeopathic treatment for kids?
