The Pandemic, From a Grandma’s Perspective

Being a grandmother is a wonderful thing! During the recent trying times, I try to look for the positives and not to dwell on the negatives, especially when it comes to staying connected to my grandson, who is 2 and a half years old.

Before the shelter-in order, we had been able to visit with him almost every weekend! In February, we had just spent 10 fun filled days with him in Florida, during which we could cuddle and hug him all we wanted.  Then the pandemic hit.  It has been difficult not being able to see him in person.  We had a few “care package drop-off” visits where we followed the social distancing guidelines. My grandson would say “Don’t get too close!” as we followed him around the cul de sac in front of our house. Those were hard visits.  It took a lot of self-control on both our parts not to run up to each other and give a big hug.

Thank goodness for modern technology.  Thinking back to the times when we didn’t have high-speed internet or smart devices, if the pandemic had hit back then, we wouldn’t – couldn’t – have had any interaction at all! With video chat,   my husband and I can not only talk with our grandson, but also see him and can engage with him in various activities!  We’ve read books together.  We’ve had “meals” cooked and served to me. We’ve had front row seats to his private concert! We’ve hidden under the covers to hide from Daddy monster. He takes me (a.k.a. his tablet) from room to room with him, shouting, “Come on Nana!”.  My favorite activity is going on the virtual Dinosaur ride …. it really brought us back to our Florida trip and made us feel like we were there together again (my grandson and his daddy were on their computer and I could see everything that they could see).   During the ride, my grandson would making comments like “Watch out Nana!”, “Be careful Nana!”, “Look out for the big dinosaur Nana!”.  It’s an absolute blast!

Since my grandson loves bedtime stories, we have gifted him a couple of recordable storybooks, so that he could have us read a story to him whenever he wants. Hopefully, in the near future, we will be able to give our grandson a big hug and cuddle again.  But for now, as I said before, thank goodness for modern technology!
