In a city celebrated for its world-class dining scene, few restaurants leave you with the feeling that you’ve just dined in someone’s home. Our recent evening at Chapeau! in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond reminded us why this cherished neighborhood gem has remained a local favorite for nearly 3 decades.
From the moment we stepped through the doors of the charming Clement Street bistro, we felt transported. The warmth, intimacy, and genuine hospitality immediately brought us back to a memorable neighborhood bistro we once discovered tucked away in a residential corner of Paris. It wasn’t just the aroma of French fare that evoked those memories. It was the feeling of being welcomed into someone’s home.
That sense of hospitality begins with executive chef Philippe Gardelle, whose passion for French cooking is evident throughout each course. Since opening Chapeau! in 1996 alongside his wife Ellen, Philippe has built more than a restaurant. Together, the duo created a gathering place where authentic French cuisine and heartfelt hospitality come together seamlessly.

His menu celebrates traditional French cooking while reimagining comfort classics for today’s diners. Every dish feels approachable, yet deeply personal, showcasing fresh ingredients and intentional execution that have become hallmarks of the Chapeau! experience.
For our family, one of the most meaningful aspects of the evening was watching our son, who lives with severe food allergies, enjoy a complete three-course French dining experience with confidence and excitement. Dining out can often be stressful for allergy families, but the team at Chapeau! handled every detail with care and attentiveness.
He began with a bowl of moules, followed by a beautifully prepared filet mignon served alongside perfectly crisp fries in classic steak et frites fashion. For dessert, he delighted in a flight of seasonal fruit sorbets, paired with one of the restaurant’s seasonal mocktails. It was a rare and wonderful opportunity for him to enjoy the same sense of culinary adventure that we often take for granted.

Meanwhile, the rest of our table embarked on a feast of thoughtfully prepared dishes that showcased both the restaurant’s French roots and the kitchen’s refined touch.
One of the standout dishes of the evening was the newly introduced whole baked Camembert. Rich, comforting, and wonderfully indulgent, it felt particularly suited to San Francisco’s cooler seasons and is destined to become our personal favorite.
Before our appetizers arrived, we appreciated the thoughtful offering of potato and onion soup “shots”. Just enough to warm the palate without leaving us too full for the meal ahead, it was one of those small gestures that reflects years of experience in dining hospitality.
Additional highlights included the salmon trio, the expertly prepared branzino meunière, and another perfectly cooked filet mignon. Each plate arrived beautifully presented while allowing the quality of the ingredients and cooking techniques to speak for themselves.

Dessert, of course, was non-negotiable. Even after all that cheese.
A silky crème brûlée delivered that satisfying crack of caramelized sugar, while the blueberry clafoutis offered a rustic elegance whose lighter flavor paired well with the richness of the brûlée.
Yet as fabulous as the food was, what lingered with us most was the hospitality.

Ellen’s attentive service elevated the entire evening. She checked in thoughtfully throughout the meal, anticipated needs before they arose, and somehow managed to make every guest in the dining room feel like a longtime friend. There was nothing performative about it. Her warmth felt genuine; effortless.
As Chapeau! approaches its 30th anniversary on November 8th, it stands as a testament to what makes neighborhood restaurants truly special. In an era when dining trends come and go, Philippe and Ellen have remained steadfast in their commitment to authentic French cuisine, exceptional hospitality, and meaningful connections with their guests.
It’s no surprise that generations of San Franciscans continue to return year after year.

For our family, Chapeau! was more than a wonderful dinner. It was a reminder that the best restaurants nourish more than an appetite. They create memories, foster community, and make guests feel like they belong.
And on a quiet stretch of Clement Street, that’s exactly what the Gardelle family has been doing for nearly 30 years.
Chapeau to Chapeau!
We look forward to returning soon for another taste of Paris, right here in San Francisco.
