Make the Switch to Aluminum-Free Deodorant this October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

0

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a time to raise awareness about breast cancer and its prevention and support those affected. While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, reducing our exposure to potential risk factors is crucial. One simple change you can make is switching to a clean, aluminum-free deodorant.

People often shy away from making the switch for fear of being “stinky,” but I promise that once you are out of the detox phase, it’s worth it.

Did you know our bodies are meant to sweat? It’s a form of detox. But for fear of:” the stink,” we have been trained to use deodorants with aluminum-based compounds to help us stop sweating. However, these deodorants have also been proven to be absorbed through the skin and detected in breast tissue.

Aluminum compounds, such as aluminum chloride or aluminum zirconium, are commonly used in antiperspirants to block sweat glands, reducing perspiration. However, concerns have arisen regarding the potential health risks associated with aluminum exposure. Some studies have suggested that long-term, frequent use of aluminum-based antiperspirants may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. While I can’t say that aluminum deodorant causes cancer, the potential link between aluminum and breast cancer makes me (and many others) think twice about their choice of deodorant.

Why you should choose aluminum-free deodorant:

  • Reduce your Risk: By opting for products that don’t contain aluminum, you can feel more confident about your daily self-care choices.
  • Promote Breast Health: Breast health should be a priority for everyone. Choosing an aluminum-free deodorant can be a small but meaningful step toward supporting your overall well-being.
  • Natural Alternatives: Aluminum-free deodorants often contain natural ingredients like baking soda, arrowroot powder, and essential oils to keep you fresh without relying on potentially harmful chemicals.
  • Avoid Skin Irritation: Some people may experience skin irritation or allergies when using aluminum-based deodorants. Switching to an aluminum-free option can also help alleviate these issues.
  • Eco-Friendly: Many aluminum-free deodorant brands also prioritize eco-friendly packaging, making it a more sustainable choice for the environment.

Here are a few tips for making the switch:

  • Read Labels: Look for deodorant products clearly labeled as “aluminum-free.” Check the ingredients list to ensure there are no aluminum compounds present.
  • Download the EWG Healthy Living App: This will help you double-check ingredients and find safer alternatives. I also recommend avoiding any products with “fragrance” in them, as this is considered a trade secret and can be a blend of potentially toxic chemicals.
  • Experiment: Finding the aluminum-free deodorant that works best for you may take some trial and error. Different formulations suit different individuals—a couple of brands I love: Beautycounter, Primally Pure, Cleo & Coco.
  • Transition Period: Give your body time to adjust to the new deodorant. You might notice changes in your perspiration patterns, but these usually stabilize after a few weeks. Using a charcoal bar or charcoal mask can help with the detox process.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is just one reminder about the importance of proactive measures to protect our health. Small changes, just swapping one product at a time, in our daily routines can significantly reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals. When you know better, you do better.

Please reach out if you need help deciphering labels or finding a better, safer alternative to a personal care product you are currently using. I’d love to help!
