expert sleep advice

Our resident sleep expert, Dr. Sarah Mitchell, joined Mid-Peninsula Moms Blog founder, Kelly Arditi, to answer the age-old question: When will my baby sleep through the night? Sarah wrote an article on this topic last week and used this Facebook Live to elaborate on the subject and answer specific reader questions.

At 1:41 minutes, Dr. Mitchell explains the reasonable age range to expect your baby to sleep through the night and common differences between exclusively breastfed babies and formula-fed babies.

At 3:10, she shares some common tricks parents try to help their baby sleep for longer stretches at night and why they usually don’t work.

At 4:10, Dr. Mitchell shares the one thing (in addition to baby’s age and daytime calorie intake) to get your baby to sleep through the night.

At 7:00, Kelly and Sarah talk about sleep crutches. The good news is that it’s okay to do what you have to do to get your baby to sleep during those first few months and sometimes your baby’s need for sleep crutches fades naturally. Other times, you’ll need to break sleeping habits with appropriate sleep teaching.

Beginning at 11:00, Dr. Mitchel fields the following sleep questions.

My 7-month-old is nursed before bed and goes to bed awake, but she still wakes up every 3 hours, and I need to nurse her back to sleep. What do we need to do differently?

My 9-month-old goes to bed with pacifier. I have to go back in and put the pacifier back in when he wakes at night. How do I get him to do this himself?

How long does sleep training take?

Does sleep training only work with little ones?
