Sunset Fridays, the popular after-hours event for the whole family, returns for its fourth year at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens with all-new bands, diverse food options, and, for the first time, a chance to travel back to the prehistoric era to see the most realistic dinosaurs around. What started as a perk for Zoo Members, Sunset Fridays has blossomed into a way to wind down the week or jumpstart the weekend, and has become an essential event for non-members as well.
This year, Sunset Fridays opened its season on August 7, with practiced participants bringing lawn chairs, blankets, wagons, plus extra layers when the sun goes down. Guests can also bring their own food if they prefer not to purchase from the food stands; however, anything fried is always enticing! Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase only, and guests cannot bring their own adult beverages. The event runs on consecutive Fridays (excluding September 25) through October 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Playfield Lawn.
The event name harkens to SF Zoo’s unique proximity to the Pacific Ocean and location in the historic Sunset District, with timing close to the sunset hour and in honor of the many animal species that are crepuscular – or active during sundown.
This fun evening event takes place in the open playfield area featuring the expansive Elinor Friend Playground, featuring three biome zones, historic Dentzel Carousel, virtual reality experience, Sculpture Learning Plaza, Playfield Café and Great Lawn, where performances are staged. In addition, an extra festival atmosphere awaits, with bubble machines, costumed animal characters, stilt walkers and other high-energy street performers.
New this year is access to the new summer-long Dinos Rule! exhibition, an immersive outdoor experience featuring 21 realistic, scientifically informed dinosaur models based on fossil evidence. Each individual dinosaur uses advanced robotics to enable natural movements, like blinking, breathing, and tail-swaying.
The live entertainment line-up is themed to different genres, a must-see for music fans of popular local bands.

Zoo Members receive free admission to the event; tickets for non-members are $14 per person 12 and over (children 11 and under are free). Visitors who have a general admission ticket can attend at no additional charge. Tickets can be purchased at sfzoo.org or walk up at the ticket window; advance reservations are not required. VIP tents are available for rental.
Tickets for Dinos Rule! are $9/non-member and $8/Zoo Member; children ages 2 and under are free.
