School is out! Summer is in full swing, and the list of things to occupy the kids is already getting short.  July 4th is on a Wednesday this year, which makes it difficult to plan a getaway. Lucky for you – we have a hidden gem right here on the Peninsula. The 25th annual Woodside Junior Rodeo!

This marvelous event is fun for the entire family. Gates open at 7:30 am, but the main event – the rodeo – begins at noon with a special Color Guard presentation. Young riders (ages 12 – 18) from all over California come to compete in thrilling rodeo competitions such as roping, range riders, and bull riding.

Kids ages 2-10 can participate in one of the most anticipated parts of the day: the Pig Scramble. During a pig scramble, a group of piglets is released into the horse arena for the kids try to “catch” the pigs. The event is broken up into smaller groups by age so that the little ones aren’t competing with the older kids. Don’t worry – no pigs (or kids) are harmed during the event; there are professional handlers supervising the entire time.

There are plenty of other activities to keep the family entertained. My kids’ favorites are the pony rides and the petting zoo. They are the sweetest ponies and most gentle animals for the kids to pet and feed.  The older (and braver) kiddos can also ride a mechanical bull and pick out their very own cowboy – or girl – hat! There is a great concession stand with cold beer and wine for the adults and plenty of snacks for the kids.

The event is hosted annually by The Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County at their amazing 20+ acre facility in Woodside. The Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County operates a center for equestrian improvement and excellence and is the home base for a men’s social club.
