Every season I look forward to checking out new trends from the runway shows. It’s fun to see how designers have reimagined an old classic or created something new and exciting. However, as a mom of two young children, I can find translating these fabulous trends into daily life somewhat of a mystery. Am I really gonna rock the transparent bag trend with diapers and rash cream showing through? Not so much.
My philosophy is that style is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, size, or parental status. So I went to my local Ambiance and did a trend inventory of eight mom-friendly looks. These looks will be comfortable (aka you can chase small people in them), durable (hello, washing machine), figure flattering, and most importantly, fun. You deserve to look great mama!
Here are some great on-trend looks for San Francisco mom life.
Jumpsuits

Talk about easy! This ‘one and done’ piece is more accessible than ever with relaxed cuts and stretchy materials. Jumpsuits highlight your natural waist, creating an hourglass silhouette. A jumpsuit says, “I’m chic and put together, now watch me wrangle my kids in the grocery store.”
The Crop Top
[easy-image-collage id=8293]
The most mysterious of tops ever created. To be honest, I’ve never been a crop top girl. How does one wear a half shirt and still feel comfortable? Or warm? Luckily, layering tops is very “in” this season. I simply layered a long tank underneath this structured crop top with leggings. Another option would be a button-down white shirt underneath the crop top. Make sure that whatever you wear underneath isn’t too bulky. Pair with an open longline cardigan on top for a San Francisco summer look. Add some cool shades with layered metal details for some fun in the sun!
Bright Yellow

Nautical stripes are a consistent spring trend. I made the look less “meh” and more “wow!” with a tie waist and statement necklace in a bright sunny yellow. This yellow was all over the spring 2018 runways (partly because it’s complementary color, lavender, is also trending!). A statement accessory in bright yellow draws the eyes up to your beautiful face and out to your shoulders. It’s all about creating that X silhouette!
Feathers

Lavender feather earrings. Doesn’t that just make you excited? Every time you look in the mirror wearing these light and colorful earrings you will be reminded of your inner goddess. Statement accessories are a great way to buy into a trend without committing your whole outfit. I’d wear these with my new black jumpsuit, or jeans and a cheeky message tee shirt like the one below.
All White
[easy-image-collage id=8296]
Haha, you want me to wear white with my kids? Yes, mama, I do! Wearing an ethereal white top or denim jacket as a mom says, “I like to live on the edge with my wardrobe, plus I have some really good bleach at home!” Try wearing a white jacket with a lightweight white sweater underneath. Hello, summer staple!
Pastel
[easy-image-collage id=8297]
Pastel colors continue to rock runways. “Millennial pink” (blush pink) is a new neutral. My suggestion for wearing this pseudo-neutral is to get a (wipeable) vegan leather jacket with a flattering structure built in. The zipper placement and neckline make any outfit you are wearing this jacket with sophisticated and put together.
Paper bag waist
[easy-image-collage id=8298]
Paper bag waist pants or skirts are universally flattering and extremely comfortable. They come up to the smallest part of your waist (slightly above your belly button). I see myself going on a date it this outfit or going to a school event with my daughter. The key part of this look is to wear a fitted shirt on top like I’m doing here with the black tank and sheer wrap top. The waist of the pants should show, or it will be all crinkly and add extra volume where it doesn’t need to be.
Cheeky message tees
[easy-image-collage id=8299]
Sometimes message tees can look a little kitschy. For an elevated take on the look, try a fun embroidered message on a clean white tee. This “make some waves” shirt reminds me to go with my gut and “be Laura” at all times!
The next time you go shopping I urge you to remember one thing: you do not need to be afraid to try new looks. Sometimes those new looks are what make you the happiest. Fashion should make you feel happy, fearless, and confident!
