“How was your day?”
My kids seem to be so annoyed when I meet them after school wanting to know how their day went. They look so happy when I peek into their classroom before pick up. Yet, in the car on the way home, I get nothing of their classroom joy. Instead, I hear, “Fine.” “Good.”
So, my husband and I have gotten creative with asking them about their day. And usually, and eventually, we will get the scoop. Here are some “other” questions that might help crack them!
- What was the funniest thing that happened today?
- Teach me something you learned today?
- Did you go outside?
- Who did you sit next to at snack time or lunch?
- What were you proud of today?
- Did anything at school make you sad?
- What was your favorite part of the day?
- How did you show kindness today?
- What was your least favorite part of the day?
- What book did your teacher read today?
- Did you build anything?
- Did you make something?
- Did you play a game?
- Who did you play with today?
- What was the hardest rule to follow today?
- Who did you say “thank you” to today?
Peppering in a few of these questions each day will likely spark something and usually start a conversation. You may not get the whole picture, but at least you will get a glimpse into their time away from you. And if they aren’t super chatty right after pick up, don’t worry. Dinner time is another great time to try.
