If you are looking for a family friendly event this weekend head to the San Francisco Zoo!  Not only will you get to see all of the amazing zoo animals, but you can experience the special Lunar New Year Celebration February 4th and 5th 10am-4pm.

The celebration show begins at 11:00am with repeat performance at 12:30pm on 2/4 and 1:30pm on 2/5. It takes place behind the penguins in front of the lion fountain. Make your way over there early in order to get a close seat before the crowd arrives (FYI it’s floor seating). You will get to watch a 40 minute Lunar New Year Celebration including martial arts demonstrations, traditional dance by the Chung Ngai Dance Troupe, Chinese high flying yo-yo, and traditional music and drums with an amazing Lion dance finale.   They also have docent guided tours and a scavenger hunt including a visit to the zoo’s rooster!

We really enjoyed the drumming and yo-yo toss. I was amazed at how well all of the children sat and watched the show. The MC of the event talked us through each performance as well as described the history and meaning behind each dance.

This event draws a crowd so make sure you arrive early! Almost 10,000 people celebrated the Lunar New Year last weekend at the zoo!  The doors open at 10am.

Come celebrate the Lunar New Year at the SF Zoo this weekend. It is truly a fun family event for all ages!
