Baking Fun with the Kids!

IMG_2119Need something to do this summer with your kids? How about baking! Immediately, you are probably thinking about flour exploding into the air and eggs thrown on the floor as a toddler covered in frosting runs around your kitchen screaming. Well, that’s what I was thinking until I randomly found Betty Crocker’s new muffin mix in the baking aisle at the grocery store. It’s genius!  This is a way to have fun baking without all the drama, emergency daytime bath, and an hour cleanup process.

This muffin mix comes in a little pouch, enough for six muffins.  I love this because usually you have to make at least 12 and neither me nor my son needs to eat multiple muffins a day for a few days to get rid of them!  It also is super simple–you only have to add milk or water.  There is no long list of ingredients–no eggs, no oil.  This equals less mess!

These muffins could literally be made in five minutes, but with kids, you can turn it into a whole baking activity.  I let my son place the muffin liners, pour the milk from the measuring cup, stir (for like five minutes straight, he loved it!), and I even let him help me scoop the batter into the muffin liners.  Then, we set the timer.  I have one of those old-fashioned countertop ones, and he was in charge of watching and waiting for it to go off.  He immediately re-set it for 45 minutes. (Good thing mommy looked at the clock when putting the muffins in the oven; I knew he was going to do that!) We patiently waited and even turned on the oven light and peeked inside.  The anticipation was adorable.IMG_2121

Finally, they were ready, and after letting them cool, my son and I sat down and ate our muffins together.  He was so excited!

Sometimes it’s the simple activities that can be the most fun. Since our little baking adventure, my son has asked to make muffins two more times. He even asked if we could throw in strawberries the next time!  My little chef…

  2. Great post, Kelly! Ben loves to bake like this with me too! He just started learning how to crack eggs, which he has been surprisingly good at! It’s so fun to find ways to share things we enjoy doing with our little ones! 🙂
