“Courage is not the absence of fear. It is doing the pose anyway — wobbly legs and all.”
It’s the most magical, most mischievous, most magnificently spooky time of year. Halloween is here, and at It’s Yoga Kids®, we are leaning all the way in. Witch poses. Spider breath. Skeleton stretches. Ghost flows. If it’s creepy, crawly, or delightfully weird, we are absolutely bringing it to the mat.
But here’s the thing about Halloween that makes it secretly perfect for yoga: it’s all about facing what scares you. And that, as it turns out, is exactly what we teach.
The spooky truth about fear
Fear lives in the body before it lives in the mind. The racing heart. The tight chest. The stomach that drops. Children feel fear in their bodies long before they have words for it — and when they don’t know what to do with that feeling, it can grow into something much bigger than the original monster under the bed.
Yoga gives children a three-step system for working with fear — not running from it, not stuffing it down, but actually moving through it with courage and breath. We call it the IYK® 3-Step Fear-Busting System.
The IYK® 3-Step System
STEP 1 · Name It to Tame It
When we give a feeling a name, we take away some of its power. “I feel scared.” “I feel nervous.” “I feel like a bat is flapping around in my stomach.” Naming what we feel activates the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s rational center, and begins to calm the fight-or-flight response. In class we say: what’s your monster called? Name the scary thing. It gets smaller the moment you do.
STEP 2 · Feel It to Free It
Once we’ve named it, we move it through the body because feelings that are felt don’t get stuck. A deep breath. A shaky warrior pose. A spider stretch that makes us laugh at ourselves a little. Movement metabolizes fear; it literally shifts the chemistry in the body and gives the nervous system a way through rather than a wall to crash into. Breathe in the brave. Breathe out the boo.
STEP 3 · See It to Be It
This is where the magic happens. Once a child has named their fear and breathed through it, we invite them to see themselves on the other side — strong, calm, and capable. Visualization is one of the most powerful tools in elite sports psychology and mindfulness practice alike. See yourself brave. See yourself free. See yourself exactly who you are becoming.
Halloween yoga poses to try at home

Witch pose — Warrior 2 with a cackle and a crooked finger

Spider breath — crawl your fingers up your arms with every inhale, flutter down with every exhale

Skeleton stretch — full body shake-out to rattle those bones loose

Ghost float — arms wide, drifting slowly in a gentle standing forward fold

Bat breath — hang upside down in a gentle fold, swinging side to side slowly

Pumpkin pose — deep squat with rounded back, arms wide like a big round gourd
The real Halloween magic is every child who walks through their fear — on the mat, in a costume, or just in a hard moment — gets a little braver. And a little braver. And a little braver. Until one day they realize the monster was never as big as it seemed. That is yoga. That is Halloween. That is the magic of being YOU.
